Understanding the IB Physics HL Course Structure

Understanding the IB Physics HL Course Structure

If you treat IB Physics HL as Standard Level (SL) with more effort, you’ll plan it badly. It’s a larger course with a different structure, and the hours show how much larger. HL carries 180 hours of syllabus content and 60 hours of experimental work, 240 in total. SL carries 110 and 40, 150 in total. That makes HL roughly 60% larger in teaching time, including 70 more hours of syllabus content than SL. For a student, that’s about 90 extra hours to absorb, 20 of them in the lab.

Of those 70 extra content hours, 37 cover five topics with no SL equivalent, and 33 deepen topics that both levels share. The split bears out what teacher Renzo Diaz, analyzing the IB Physics guide for the first-assessment-2025 syllabus, argues: “an HL student is not doing SL, but harder.” HL means more new topics, more depth in the shared ones, and extra experimental hours, so students need more than extra last-minute revision.

The Two Written Papers and What They Demand

HL’s extra size becomes visible in the papers, which ask for two different kinds of work: data reading in Paper 1B and written reasoning in Paper 2. The current IB Physics course, first examined in 2025, has two external papers and no Paper 3. Paper 1 is two booklets taken together without a break. Paper 1A is multiple-choice, with no penalty for wrong answers, and has 40 questions at HL (25 at SL). Paper 1B consists of data-based questions. Paper 2 mixes short-answer and extended-response questions, so each part of a problem needs visible reasoning. Calculators are allowed, and you receive a clean copy of the data booklet.

Identical weightings can mislead. Paper 1 is 36% of the grade, Paper 2 is 44%, and the investigation is 20% at both levels, yet HL papers are longer and carry more marks. HL Paper 1 runs 2 hours for 60 marks, against 1 hour 30 minutes for 45 at SL. HL Paper 2 runs 2 hours 30 minutes for 90 marks, against 1 hour 30 minutes for 50 at SL in the 2025 sessions. The percentages match, but HL asks you to hold a multi-step line of work together for much longer. So solve full problems under timed conditions on a regular basis, well before exam day, rather than working only untimed exercises.

A weekly readiness check, kept as a simple log, can show whether your practice is improving the skills Paper 1B and Paper 2 reward instead of just adding study hours.

  • Setup and logging (10 minutes after any timed set): record your percentage or marks, which component you practiced (1A, 1B, or 2), and the top one or two error causes: concept gap, misread data, modeling setup (turning a physics situation into the right equations and assumptions), explanation or justification, or time management.
  • Weekly review: once a week, scan your log and identify the single most frequent error cause across all sets, not the hardest chapter.
  • If Paper 1B errors are mostly misread graphs or tables, add two short data-interpretation drills before any longer problems next week.
  • If Paper 2 errors are mostly “can’t finish” but the steps you complete are correct, add one longer timed block next week and stop adding new topics for that week.
  • If Paper 2 errors are mostly missing or unclear justification, next week rewrite two solutions focusing only on reasoning statements: why that principle, what assumption, what check.
  • If accuracy is solid in short sets but collapses in long durations, treat stamina as a skill and increase one timed block length each week until HL-length work is sustainable.

Within a few weeks, the log shows which cause turns up most often, and that tells you what to fix next far more reliably than which chapter feels hardest. It only pays off if timed practice feeds it on a steady schedule. A log filled in twice a month is a diary, not a diagnostic.

It also measures only the two papers. The other 20% of the grade runs by different rules.

The Scientific Investigation as a Parallel Track

The scientific investigation is the one component that is identical at SL and HL, and it runs alongside your paper preparation, not instead of it. It’s a single task, marked by your teacher and moderated by the IB, worth 24 marks and 20% of the final grade, with about 10 recommended hours.

A recent mixed-methods study of 45 Spanish secondary students, published in Science Education International, compared a cookbook-style DNA extraction lab with an inquiry-based version. Both groups improved on an immediate test, but only the inquiry group showed deeper conceptual understanding, referred explicitly to the scientific method, and retained a sense of meaningful learning in delayed responses.

The study wasn’t IB-based, but the IB investigation is similar in the way that matters: it’s practical work you plan and manage yourself, not a script you follow. Read as one small study, the findings suggest that inquiry-style investigations can build deeper conceptual understanding and explicit scientific-method reasoning than following a script does, which is a different kind of work from timed exam drills.

Treat the investigation as a parallel track: give it a fixed weekly slot and clear milestones, rather than waiting to work on it “whenever there’s time.” The 10 recommended hours tell you how big the task is. The weekly slot and the milestones protect those hours across two years, so the work doesn’t end up rushed and weaker, or turn into avoidable stress.

Before you commit to a question, run three checks. Favor repeatability over novelty, and narrow your question if it needs specialized equipment you can’t reliably access for repeat trials. Then make sure you can name the dependent variable, the key controlled variables, and a practical way to generate a range of data. Don’t move beyond question selection until you can.

The milestone for the end of Year 1 is a tested method and pilot data that show the measurement works. That makes Year 2 about completing the investigation and writing it up, not inventing it from scratch.

One rule matters more than the rest: once data collection and analysis are complete, freeze the methodology. Reopening it during peak paper rehearsal is how a finished 20% component ends up competing with the longest practice blocks of the course.

Ordering the Two HL Years So the Papers and the Investigation Stop Competing

Squeeze the content, the paper practice, and the investigation into the final months, and their demands collide, so it’s better to phase them.

The sequence below has four steps. Each one ends not on a date but when a specific limiter stops being your main problem: a type of mistake or a constraint like timing no longer holds you back.

  1. Baseline setup (first 2–3 weeks): start one course-long error-and-methods log, the same one the weekly readiness check draws on, and tag each miss with the same causes. Fix one or two weekly slots for paper-style practice and one for the investigation, so neither becomes optional. Move on when the log is running and the slots are fixed.
  2. Year 1, modeling fluency and investigation launch: each week, do one or two mixed-topic problem sets written as full solution chains, from starting equation through substitution and unit check to final statement. Every two weeks, do one Paper 1B-style drill in an unfamiliar context. Each month, hit an investigation milestone: question direction, pilot method, measurable variables. Move on when most misses come from assumptions or interpretation, not forgotten core relationships.
  3. Year 2, early to midyear, paper skills: with Year 1’s fluency in place, shift into exam-style analysis and timed work. Each week, do one timed Paper 1A segment and one timed Paper 1B segment, kept separate, and log misses by cause: concept gap, misread data, or weak justification. Add one Paper 2-style set where you write out assumptions and choices. Each month, run a longer timed block toward HL durations. Move on when timing, not understanding, limits full-paper work.
  4. Final run-up, full rehearsal: every one to two weeks, sit full-length timed blocks, especially sustained Paper 2 reasoning. After each, run a repair week from your log, fixing the same error type with two or three fresh problems rather than rereading notes. Before you start this phase, investigation data collection and analysis must be finished.

Arriving at the Final Run-Up With the Investigation Done

IB Physics HL rewards planning for a bigger course, not working harder at a smaller one, and a plan that treats it as SL with extra memorization fails where HL is different.

Learn the content and the modeling skills first, because Paper 2 needs every step of your reasoning on the page. Move into timed paper practice next, because HL papers run long enough that sustained work has to be trained. Start the investigation early and keep it moving alongside both, so it doesn’t compete with them later.

A student who follows that order reaches the final exam phase with the investigation already finished and every remaining week given to paper rehearsal.
